NTSI

The Nonlinear Thin Shell Instability

An initially stable planar slab is perturbed from equilibrium by warping it with a sine function. To excite the NTSI, this perturbation must be of long wavelength (compared to the shell thickness) and of large amplitude (again compared to the shell thickness). The series of images shown above illustrate the evolution of the NTSI. Click on each image for a closer look.
