Classroom: Cox 200, MWF 11:20 - 12:10

Instructor: Professor John Blondin (515-7096; john_blondin@ncsu.edu)
My office is 213 Bureau of Mines, the small brick building next to Cox Hall. My office door is always open to students, but I will make it a point to be available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 to 2.

Grading Policy:

Text: Classical Mechanics by John R. Taylor (University Science Books). Students may find it useful to have a mathematics reference book such as "Pocket Book of Integrals and Mathematical Formulas" by Ronald Tallarida (CRC Press).

Prerequisites: PY203 or 208, MA 341

Student Learning Objectives:
Students will survey the general principles of mechanics and their application to one- and two-dimensional motion, rotational motion, and oscillations.

Late Assignments and Incomplete Grades:
Extensions will be granted on homework deadlines for students with excused absences. Partially completed work will be given partial credit.

Absences and Scheduling Makeup Work:
Attendance will be taken occasionally throughout the semester. The grading scheme (see below) has no reward for good attendance, and no penalty for poor attendance. To encourage good attendance there will be test questions that are based on material discussed in class. It will not be possible to answer those questions correctly unless you attend class and take complete notes. Make-up tests are permitted for students with excused absences, including documented illness and/or class conflicts. Make-up tests are generally not permitted because of a conflict with an off-campus activity such as your job. Contact the instructor for information on how to arrange a make-up test.

Statement on Academic Integrity:
The instructor of this course is committed to upholding the University policy on academic integrity, as described in the Code of Student Conduct, which can be found at: http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/student_services/student_discipline/POL11.35.1.php

Statement for students with disabilities:
Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. In order to take advantage of available accommodations, students must register with Disability Services for Students at 1900 Student Health Center, Campus Box 7509, 515-7653. http://www.ncsu.edu/provost/offices/affirm_action/dss/ For more information on NC State's policy on working with students with disabilities, please see http://www.ncsu.edu/provost/hat/current/appendix/appen_k.html.

Statement on laboratory safety or risk assumption:
Repetitive use of Hamiltonian Dynamics has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory rats.

Statement on extra expenses:
Beyond the purchase of a textbook and a suitable calculator, there are no significant extra expenses.

Statement on transportation:
All class meetings and exams are conducted on campus. Transportation to an off-campus site is not required.
