190th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society: Astronomy in North Carolina

Welcome to the local homepage for the 190th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, 8-12 June 1997. This site includes information about the local hosts, the conference site, and special events that will take place during the week of the conference. We hope that you will take some time to explore this site; this promises to be a wonderful meeting in a beautiful location...a great year to bring the family or plan a beach trip after the meeting. To celebrate the AAS's first ever meeting in North Carolina, the mayor of Winston-Salem has declared the week of the meeting "Astronomy Week." In addition to the usual AAS program and social events, the week will be full of events for the public, for educators in North Carolina, and for meeting participants. KEEP READING!

Host Institutions and Organizations

The local organizing committee of the North Carolina AAS meeting has members from virtually every research university in North Carolina.

Evening At SciWorks Science and Nature Center

SciWorks Science and Nature Center invites AAS meeting registrants to attend an evening dessert reception on 9 June, 7:00-10:00pm. Families are welcome, buses will circulate all evening.

Public Lecture by Bob Kirshner

Bob Kirshner, Harvard CfA, will present the public lecture entitled, "Taking the Measure of the Universe How Big? How Old? How Do We Know?" The lecture will take place at the Benton Convention Center, 7:00pm on Tuesday evening, June 10. While this is a public event, meeting registrants are invited to attend.

Picnic and Bluegrass

Instead of the traditional banquet, the LOC has chosen to hold a picnic at Tanglewood Park near Winston-Salem. Picnic goers can play golf, swim, ride horses, walk or play in an AAS softball or volleyball game. A buffet dinner (Southern-style barbeque and fried chicken, of course) will be served at 6:00pm, followed by entertainment by the band, "Amazing Bluegrass Sounds." Special low prices for students and kids.....bring your softball glove.

Childcare

Child care can be arranged on an individual basis by contacting Connie Kale at the Calvery Moravian Day Care, (910) 724-1835. Call by May 1 to ensure availability. The Calvery Moravian Day Care is a short 10-minute walk from the Convention Center. Estimated price is $80 to $90 for the week, depending on the age of the child.

Astronomy in North Carolina: A Workshop for Teachers

During the two days prior to the AAS conference, 7-8 June, the local organizing committee is hosting a workshop that aims to expose middle school and high school teachers from North Carolina to current astronomy research and classroom techniques.

AAS INVOLVEMENT: AAS members interested in contributing to the program can contact the LOC. There is also a one-day mentoring workshop for professionals being offered by the Hands On Universe Program.

Winston-Salem

The local organizing committee chose Winston-Salem because of its central location in the state and its exceptional charm. Winston-Salem boasts a reputation as a city of the arts and is home to Wake Forest University and Old Salem, an historic moravian community. There are plenty of activities to keep your family busy in Winston-Salem and throughout North Carolina.

North Carolina: Make a Vacation of It!

This would be a great time to bring the family and take a vacation after the meeting--the beach and mountains are both nearby, and the weather is wonderful in June (high 70's to high 80's). Click the headline above to get tourism information for the entire state.
