PY 228: STELLAR ASTROPHYSICS
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Class participation will be an important, integral part of
the course (and 15% of your final grade). The following
activities are included in my definition of "class participation":
- Class Discussions
- Class Presentations
- In an effort to make students aware of current astrophysics
research, students are required to make at least one (preferably many)
presentation(s) in class of articles from the popular press relating
to astronomy. Sources include newspapers (the science section of
the NY Times is particularly good), magazines (Time, Newsweek, Scientific
American, Science News), television, and of course the World Wide Web.
The in-class report should breifly describe the contents of the article
and the impact of such on our understanding of the Universe. Please try
and tie the report into material we have covered in class.
- Group Research Project
- All students will be required to participate in a group research
project during the semester. Details will follow as the project becomes
defined.
- Exploring the WWW
- Students are strongly encouraged to "surf" the net for recent
astronomy news and information. This
link provides a handy starting
point. Any exciting news or interesting WWW links should be shared
with the rest of the class.
