Task Group: Theory

These students were asked to create a theoretical model to explain the observations of Bally & Devine. They followed, to some extent, the suggestions in Bally & Devine, namely that the multiple bow shocks seen in the superjet were the result of episodic outlfow, and that the "lazy S" pattern could be attributed to precession of the jet outflow axis. However, they also came up with their own contribution. They suggested that the precession itself might explain the train of bowshocks, i.e., the bowshocks might represent kinks in the long, slowly precessing jet. The students were then asked to quantify the parameters in their two competing models: Precession vs. Periodic.
